— Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Goessel Mennonite Church for Daniel V. Schmidt, 73, who died unexpectedly of a heart attack April 8, Rev. Leo Miller the pastor, officiated. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt lived on a farm near Goessel until about 10 months ago, when they moved to Goessel. Surviving in addition to Mrs. Schmidt are two daughters, Mrs. Henry Wedel of the Canton community and Mrs. Leland Kirby of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four brothers and one sister; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

D. V. SCHMIDT

Daniel V. Schmidt, son of Peter A. and Sara Voth Schmidt, was born in Marion County, Kansas, on May 9, 1885. He suddenly and peacefully passed to his eternal reward on April 8, 1959, at 10:30 a. m. at Goessel, Kansas, having reached the age of 73 years, 10 months, and 29 days.

On May 10, 1910, he was united in marriage to Margareta Richert. They shared joys and sorrows for almost 49 years. On May 27, 1955, they celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with a host of friends and relatives. To this union were born two daughters and one son. The son, Daniel E., was killed in a highway accident on July 12, 1955. His parents, three brothers and one sister also preceded him in death.

In 1910 he and his wife homesteaded at Syracuse, Kansas, and the following year returned to Marion County and settled on a farm four miles south of Goessel. In the fall of 1916 they settled on a farm one mile south of Goessel where he was engaged in farming till June of 1958 at which time they settled comfortablr in Goessel, Kansas where they enjoyed 10 happy months.

On June 11, 1905, he was baptized upon his confession of faith by Elder Peter Balzer and received into the fellowship of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church. When the Goessel Mennonite Church was organized in 1920 he was a charter member and remained a faithful member till his Heavenly Father called him home.

He leaves to mourn his departure his loving wife, Margareta; two daughers [sic] Ama Wedel and husband Henry of rural route, Canton, Lillian Kirby and husband Leland of Colorado Spring [sic Springs], Colo., one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Schmidt of Newton; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret, Mrs. Arthur Bergman of Wichita; four brothers, Edward [sic Eduard] of Newton, Albert of Hillsboro, Alwine [sic Alvin]of Newton, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Karl Schmidt of Hesston, and a brother-in-law, P. M. Schroeder of Newton, and a host of friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. April 1 in the Goessel Mennonite Church. Burial was made at the Goessel Cemetery.

Note: According to GRANDMA #58506 the fourth surviving brother not named in the obituary was Johannes Schmidt.
