DANIEL J. SCHMIDT
Daniel J. Schmidt was born Oct. 8, 1895 on a farm near Halstead, Kan. to Jacob A. R. and Katherine Schmidt. He died on Aug. 23, 1972 in the Trinity Hospital, Dodge City, Kan., reaching the age of 76.
Father grew to manhood in the Halstead community where he received his education. At the age of 23 he surrendered his life to Christ, and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite on June 23, 1918. He remained faithful to his vows until death.
During World War I he served as a conscientious objector at Camp Funston. After his discharge he and his brother Nathan came to western Kansas and took up farming in Gray County. In 1920 he and his brother established residence on a farm southwest of Montezuma, Kan.
He married Eva Koehn of Halstead, Kan. on June 11, 1922. One son and one daughter were born into their home. They shared life's joys and sorrows for a little over 50 years, having celebrated the golden anniversary on June 11 of this year. He served on the Bethel Home building committee and latter on the Board of Directors.
He had a deep interest in the church and did much reading to acquaint himself with her doctrines and history. In turn he imparted this knowledge to us by faithful teaching. Father loved to meet strangers and his outgoing personality won him many friends. He had a concern for the church and the salvation of others, often seeking opportunity to speak to those in need of salvation.
He leaves to mourn his sudden departure his bereaved companion; son, Milton and wife Wanda, and daughter, Alberta and husband Walter Redger, both of Montezuma; nine grandchildren; six brothers, Nathan and Abe of Halstead, Adam of Montezuma, Norman of Ingalls, Melvin of Rich Hill, Mo., and Llewellyn of Newton; eight sisters, Lydia and Bernitta Schmidt, Mrs. Katherine Buller, Mrs. Lorene Koehn and Mrs. Osie Koehn, all of Halstead, Mrs. June Becker of Rich Hill, Mo., Mrs. Alma Jean Yost of Wilmore, Kan. and Mrs. Eva Jantz of La Junta, Colo.
He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. — The Family.
