text of obituary:
CARL SCHMIDT
Carl Schmidt, dear husband and father, son of Peter A. and Sara Voth Schmidt, was born on Sept. 14, 1886, on a farm near Goessel, Kansas and departed this life at his home at Hesston, Kan. a little after three o'clock the morning of Oct. 19, 1956, at the age of 70 years, one month, and five days.
He received his education in the Emmenthal Grade School and the Hillsboro preparatory school in Marion County, Kan. On May 19, 1907, he was baptized upon confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as his own personal Saviour and received into the membership of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church. He joined the Newton Bible Church as a charter member in the spring of 1955 where he attended services whenever possible.
On Dec. 12, 1914, he was married to Sara Unruh. He engaged in farming until 1941 when he moved to Hesston, Kansas where he served as janitor for three years.
Though he was failing in health and strength during the last years, and according to the doctor had hardening of the arteries, he was seldom sick. He was of a quiet nature and seldom expressed himself yet we have the assurance that he was ready, not because of any works of righteousness he had done but because he accepted the only way of salvation.
On Wednesday evening he attended his last church service, the weekly prayer meeting and Bible study, Thursday, the next evening, he suddenly became very sick. Though he suffered intensely for about two hours he had no fear and remained conscious to the end, insisting that no doctor be called. When questioned minutes before he departed we were comforted when he assured us that his trust was in Jesus only.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, Sara; four children, Wanda and Ruth of the home, Ralph and wife Virginia of Canyon Creek, Mont., Irene and Willard Nitzsche and two granddaughters, Judy and Bonnie Nitzsche of Hesston; five brothers, Dan V., Edward [sic Eduard], Albert, Alving [sic Alvin], and John; one sister, Margaret (Mrs. Arthur Bergman); one uncle, C. R. Voth; one aunt, Mrs. John Banman, and many relatives and friends.
Though we mourn the departure of our loved one and shall miss him we can not but praise the Lord who hath done all things well and according to His promise in Isaiah 4:10. — The Family.
