SERVICES AT HILLSBORO FOR PIONEER SETTLER

Hillsboro, Kans. — Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite church here on July 1 for Benjamin Schmidt, 84, who passed away at the Bethel Deaconess hospital, Newton, on June 28. He was the father of Sister Marie Schmidt of Bethel hospital.

Also surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anna Schmidt, another daughter, Mrs. J. J. Heppner of Merced, Calif., four sons, 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He came to this country from Poland as a youth and farmed for a number of years.

BENJAMIN SCHMIDT

Benjamin Schmidt was born in Deutch Wemischle [sic Deutsch Wymysle], Poland on March 25, 1868, the son of Andreas and Anna (Ewert) Schmidt. In his 17th year, in 1884, he was baptized upon the confession of his faith and received into the Mennonite church by Elder Jacob Foth.

In 1892, July 5, he married Eva Schroeder, also of Duetch Wemischle [sic Deutsch Wymysle] and in the following months of the same year they came from Poland to Kansas. Here they acquired a farm near Hillsboro, and joined the Johannestal church.

In 1918 they moved into the town of Hillsboro where they joined the First Mennonite church, of which they remained members until their death.

Their union was blessed with four sons and three daughters, of whom one son and daughter, Johann and Anna, preceded him into the beyond. On Aug. 2, 1921, Mother Eva also was called to her eternal Home.

In 1925 father was once more privileged to visit his native land, Poland. While there he married Anna Schroeder of Duetch Wemischle [sic Deutsch Wymysle], who then came back to America with him. To this second union were born two sons, Harold and Richard. Harold too preceded his father in death on March 31, 1940.

Father reached the age of 84 years, three months and three days.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Mrs. Anna (Schroeder) Schmidt of Hillsboro; children, Cornelius of Sheldon, Mo., Sister Marie of the Bethel Deaconess hospital at Newton, Herman of near Hillsboro, Emelia of Merced, Calif., Benjamin of San Franciso [sic], Calif., and Richard of the U.S. Air Force, El Paso, Texas.

We mourn his passing because his prayerful care meant so much to us, but we are happy to know he is in his eternal Home in God’s great realm of light and life.
