— Mrs. Barbara Schmidt, 85, for many years a resident of the Moundridge community, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 23, at the Bethel Home for Aged in Newton, where she had made her home for more than seven years. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the West Zion Mennonite Church in Moundridge. Rev. Harris Waltner officiating. Mrs. Schmidt's husband, Ernest B. Schmidt, died in 1947. Surviving are three daughters and one son, and three grandsons.

Mrs. Barbara Schmidt was born on January 5, 1873, to Henry and Elizabeth (Auernheimer) Dyck at Franklin, Lee County, Iowa.
Upon her confession of faith she was baptized and received into the membership of the Zion Mennonite Church of Donnellson, Iowa on Sept. 25, 1887.
nI [sic] her youth, she accompanied her brother in moving to Moundridge, Kansas. After her arrival in Kansas,she worked as a seamstress, going from home to home. Her family also came to Moundridge some time later.
In 1889 she became a member of the West Zion Mennonite Church, where she was a member until her death. She loved the church and served actively in the Mission Workers society as well as in other church functions.
On July 31, 1899, she was united in marriage with Ernest B. Schmidt. To this union were born four children Stella, Elma, Lloyd and Alieda. They resided on the Schmidt homestead, three miles north of Moundridge, until 1910, when they moved to Moundridge.
She and her husband shared the responsibilities of life until July 10, 1917, when her husband passed away. After his death she made her home in Wichita for two years. Later she lived in Newton as a resident in the Warkentine and Spangler Homes. The last seven and one-half years she lived in the Bethel Home for the Aged.
She quietly passed away on the evening of Dec. 23, having reached the age of 85 years, 11 months, and18 days.
She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Stella and husband Ernest Miller of Hesston, Elma (Mrs. Fred Anderson) of Wichita,and Alieda and husband Herman Ewy of Wichita; one son, Lloyd and wife Fay of Wichita; three grandsons, and other relatives and friends.
She was the youngest in her family and was preceded in death by her four sisters and three brothers; also by one son-in-law, Fred Anderson.
Funeral services were held in the West Zion Mennonite church, Moundridge on Dec. 28 with Rev. Harris Waltner officiating.
