— Funeral services were held at the Alexanderwohl church Sunday afternoon for Mrs. Anna Schmidt, 82, who died Sept. 11 at the home near Goessel. Rev. P. A. Wedel officiated. Mrs. Schmidt was born here Oct. 14, 1874, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Koehn. Her husband, Heinrich H. Schmidt, died in 1941. Surviving are a son, Cornelius, of the home, four daughters, two brothers and two sisters.

ANNA KOEHN SCHMIDT

Anna Koehn Schmidt, our dear mother, was born in Newton, Kansas on Oct.14, 1874, and passed away at her home near Goessel, Kansas on Sept. 11, 1957, at 2:30 in the afternoon. She reached the age of 82 years, 10 months and 27 days.

She was the daughter of Cornelius and Wilhelmina Lehrman Koehn, and was the oldest child in a family of 13 children, six brothers and seven sisters.

Mother grew up in a Christian home. She was baptized upon the confession of her faith in Jesus Christ as her Saviour on May 22, 1893, by Elder Jacob Buller and became a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church.

On Jan. 26, 1901, she was married to Heinrich H. Schmidt and assumed the care of his four motherless children, one son and three daughters. this union was blest with one son and two daughters.

This marriage of 41 years and 36 days was dissolved by death when father passed away on Feb. 22,1941. Two children preceded her in death, Henry at the age of 30 years in 1917, and Anna at the age of 39 years in 1933.

On the 26th of August,1955, she fell and broke her hip and had to undergo a major operation which was successful. On Sept. 11 she could leave the hospital and go to her home. Two years later on the same date she went to her eternal Home.

The last two years she was unable to walk because of the infirmities of old age. She spent much of her time in a wheelchair. Several light strokes weakened her considerably. The stroke she suffered on June 10 was an added affliction because it affected her speech.

The “German Gospel Hour” was much enjoyed by her. She was always grateful when friends came to sing for her, “Shall We Gather At The River” and “Close To Thee” were favorite numbers.

She is survived by her children, Cornelius and Minnie of the home, Helena and husband Lawrence L. Carlisle of Wichita, Martha and husband Henry C. Voth of rural Newton, Sara and husband Oswin K. Galle of Valley Center; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, David C. Koehn of rural Newton and Henry Koehn of Newton; two sisters, Mrs. Helena Dalke of Reedley, Calif. and Mrs. Margaret Androes of Newton, and nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held Sept. 15 in the Miller Funeral Home and the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church. Interment was made in the Alexanderwohl cemetery.
