MRS. ANNA SCHMIDT

After many years of illness in the hospital, Mrs. Anna Schmidt departed this life on Nov. 18, 1960, due to heart complications. She reached the age of 86 years, eight months, and eight days. She was born in Karlsberg, Kreis Ostrog, Russia, on Harch [sic March] 10, 1874, the daughter of David and Eva Becker Schmidt. She came to America with her parents when she was about nine years old.

She was baptized in 1890 upon the confession of her faith in Jesus Christ and united with the Bergthal Mennonite church, of which she remained a faithful member all her life. On May 10, 1896,she was united in marriage with Jacob B. Bergthal Mennonite church as minister and elder for 40 years. As long as she was able she stood by her husband in his ministry. She helped by visiting church members and by serving in the Women's Missionary Society. She was a charter member and one of the early presidents to the organization, later named Bergthal Mission Workers.

She leaves to cherish her memory, four children, Paul of Hutchinson, Kan.; Mrs. W. F. Unruh (Pauline) of Greensburg, Kan.; Mrs. Brenton Richert (Edythe) [sic Edith] of Newton, Kan.; Mrs. Ben Voth (Esther) of Empire, Ore.; and a foster son, Fred of Pawnee Rock, Kan., 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, one brother, Henry D. Schmidt of Pawnee Rock, and many nieces and nephews. Three grandchildren preceded her in death.
