Retired Minister Called by Death

Corn, Okla. — Funeral services for Rev. Alfred [sic Albert] G. Schmidt, 74, retired minister, were held at the Herold Mennonite Church, Cordell, on the afternoon of Sept. 26. Rev. John Arn, the pastor, officiated.

Rev. Schmidt had been in failing health after suffering a stroke seven years ago. Since January 1971 he and his wife had been residents of the Corn Home for Aged, where he died on Sept. 24. He was a former administrator of the Home.

A resident of Oklahoma most of his life, Rev. Schmidt was ordained to the ministry in 1935 at the Sichar Mennonite Church, Cordell. He served in the ministry at the Sichar Church and also at Shafter, Calif., Medford, Okla., and Carnegie, Okla. He also served at the Oklahoma Bible Academy, Meno.

REV. ALBERT G. SCHMIDT

Albert G. Schmidt was born to Jacob J. and Katherine Goraching [sic Gorsching] Schmidt on April 5, 1898, two miles west of what was then Shelly, Okla. He reached the age of 74. Father's childhood years were spent in the Shelly and Gotebo communities where his parents made their home.

As a young man, father realized his lost condition and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour. On May 31, 1915, he was baptized by Rev. Michael Klassen and received into the Herold Mennonite Church.

On Oct. 17, 1921, father married Martha Kliewer. This union was blessed with one son and two daughters.

Father loved and served his Master faithfully for the rest of his earthly life. On May 12, 1935, he was ordained as a minister of the gospel in the Sichar Mennonite Church, Cordell, Okla. by Rev. Jacob Jantzen. He served in the Sichar Church, the Shafter Mennonite Church, Shafter, Calif., Medford Mennonite Church, Medford, Okla., Oklahoma Bible Academy, Meno, Home for the Aged, Corn, Okla., and Greenfield Mennonite Church, Carnegie, Okla.

About seven years ago, father suffered a stroke and had been in failing health ever since. Father and mother moved to the M.B. Home for the Aged at Corn, Okla. on Jan. 9, 1971, where they were loving cared for by attendants of the Home.

Father remained steadfast in his faith until the Lord called him to his eternal home on Sept. 24, 1972 [sic Sept. 20, 1972].

Mourning his departure are his wife, of the Home for the Aged, Corn; one son, Marvin E. and wife Tillie, of Hutchinson, Kan.; two daughters, Fern Sperling and husband Homer of Newton, Kan. and Sylvia Larsen and husband Eldson of Anapolis, Brazil; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Menno and Eldon Schmidt of Cordell, Okla.; two sisters, Bertha, Mrs. Otto Pankratz of Cordell and Selma, Mrs. Menno Kliewer of Boise, Idaho.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 26 at the Herold Church, Cordell, with Rev. John Arn officiating.
