Adina Schmidt

Adina Schmidt, daughter of Rev. Henry H. and Helena Schmidt was born March 3, 1900, in McPherson Co. near Moundridge, Kansas, and died August 18, 1938, a little before 2 o'clock in the Bethel Hospital at Newton, Kansas, at the age of 38 years, 5 months and 15 days.

She was baptized October 7, 1917, by elder Wm. Ewert and joined the Friedenstal church, where she has been a true and faithful worker till the Lord said "Come home my child for your work on earth is done."

In the past she often spoke of getting ready to leave this world. She set her house in order before she left for the hospital. A few days before she said, "Papa, Mama, I am now ready, all ready." Such thoughts as this and others she often expressed in the past months. Already in early spring she said, one out of our family will go and I will be the one. I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Even though the Lord let her go through hard and dark trails this last year, she has fought all her battles and won.

In spring of this year internal afflictions set in that caused her much pain and sleepless nights, of which nobody knew but she alone. Nobody knows how many prayers were sent up to the great physician before a decision was made for an operation. The very serious operation seemed to surpass all expectations in results the first seven days.

When asked if she had any pains, she always answered, No, none. Oh how good is the dear Lord to me, how very good. But on the eighth day a change for the worse took place and she was very sick, but also without much pain. This also led to her too soon and sudden death.

Adina has always been busy in church work, Sunday school, Christian Endeavor and sewing society. She has taught a Sunday school class on and off for 16 years. As member of sewing society committee for several years and teacher in vacation Bible school and in many other ways she was active in the Lord's work. One of her last concerns was her Sunday school class which she taught this year. But she made her wish and request known in this behalf also. She is now gone, her place is vacant.

In her last hours, when asked if she still held fast in the Lord, she said, "Yes, the Lord is my shepherd, he is so very good to me." And further in her last minutes she said, "I am going to be with the Lord." She departed calmly and peacefully so to say without a death struggle.

She leaves her father, mother, only brother, sister-in-law and acquaintances to mourn her too soon and sudden death. But not without hope, but as those who have the assurance that she is at rest with the Lord and waiting for us to come. ]

The funeral was held on August 21. Words of comfort were spoken by the following brethren at 1:30 at the home: Rev. P. H. Unruh in German, based on Revelation 7:1-9, and a 2:00 o'clock in the Friedenstal church by Rev. P. H. Unruh, part of Revelation 21 for opening and Rev. John H. Epp on Phil. 3:20 also in German. Rev. Clyde Dirks of Hutchinson spoke on 2 Peter 2:11 in English. An octet sang several impressive songs.
