— Funeral services for Abraham A. Schmidt, 86, who died at his home at Canton on Sept. 26, took place at the Alexanderwohl church near Goessel last Sunday. He is survived by four sons and three daughters, one of whom, Mrs. Carl Westergard, resides in Newton.

ABRAHAM A. SCHMIDT

Abraham A. Schmidt was born in Odessa, South Russia, on March 27, 1860. As a young man he was baptized upon confession of faith in his Saviour Jesus Christ on Dec. 4, 1881, and was received into the membership of the Alexanderwohl church, of which he remained a faithful member until the end.

He was united in marriage to Marie Buller on March 19, 1885, by Rev. Henry Banman. This union was however severed when death took his beloved wife on Dec. 24, 1929. To this union were born eight children, the eldest of whom passed away in infancy.

Those remaining to mourn his passing are Jacob B. Schmidt of Canton, Henry B. Schmidt of Hugoton, Abraham Burton Schmidt of Bucklin, Edward Schmidt of Canton, Mrs. Carl Westergard of Newton, Mrs. Nettie Hackler and Mrs. E. K. Loewen of Canton. Also 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren remain to mourn his death.

In his earlier years he was a farmer in Marion and McPherson counties, from which occupation he retired in 1914. For a time he was in the produce business in Canton, turning the business over to his son-in-law in 1929. He had been in failing health for a year, but became seriously ill only two days before his death.

He passed away at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday evening, Sept. 26, at his home in Canton. he reached the age of 86 years, 5 months, and 29 days.

Funeral services were held at the Bergen Funeral Home in Goessel, Kansas, and the Alexanderwohl church on Sunday morning at 10:00 A.M. Rev. Philip A. Wedel, pastor of the church, had charge of the funeral, bringing the messages, while Rev. C. C. Wedel gave the invocation. The church quartet also rendered appropriate songs.
