Memorial Service Held For MCC Trainee Director

Schlichting emma 1968.jpg
Akron, Pa. — A memorial service was held here last week for Miss Emma Schlichting, administrator of the Mennonite Central committee trainee and sponsorship programs, who passed away Tuesday, July 23. Her service with MCC covered a 23-year period and three continents.

In a tribute to Miss Schlichting, William Snyder, executive secretary, noted that, "while Emma did not have a family of her own, she became an American mother to hundreds of trainees and to those young children around the world who have benefited from her work in MCC's child sponsorship program." The memorial service was conducted at the Akron Mennonite Church, where she had been a member.

The funeral was held at Corn, Okla. on Saturday, July, 27.

Although she had been ill with cancer for several years, her death came suddenly. Miss Schlichting, 51, had continued to work part-time until recently.

Her first assignment was Akron headquarters in 1945 when she served as switchboard operator. She then went to Paraguay as a teacher. She also served in Austria, and Brazil as a matron and in Germany with MCC's refugee work. The majority of her years with MCC were spent at Akron headquarters. In addition to switchboard operator, she served as hostess and matron until 1960, when she assumed responsibilities of the trainee and sponsorship programs.
