Iron Lung Fails To Keep Polio Victim Alive

Sugarcreek, Ohio. — An attack of polio suffered 10 years ago proved fatal on Oct. 30 to 32-year-old Roman C. Schlabach of the Millersburg community.

Completely paralyzed since the attack, Schlabach was admitted to Union Hospital on Tuesday evening when the experienced difficulty in breathing. He was placed in an iron lung, and when he failed to respond it was decided to take him to an Akron hospital. He died in ambulance en route.

He was a member of the Amish church, and funeral services were conducted at the home on Nov. 3. Surviving are his parents, Crist [Christian] O. and Mary Ann Schlabach, four brothers and four sisters.
