Widely Known Bishop Called Away In Death

H. R. SCHERTZ 34 YEARS PASTOR AT METAMORA, ILL. MENNONITE CHURCH

Metamora, Ill. — Funeral services were held here Friday, Feb. 12, for Bishop Henry R. Schertz, 67, at the Metamora Mennonite church of which he was pastor for 34 years.

The services were conducted by Bishop S. C. Yoder, president emeritus of Goshen College, Goshen, Ind., and Bishop A. C. Good of Sterling. Aside from the congregation, friends and acquaintances from far and near attended.

Bishop Schertz died quite unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 9, in Methodist Hospital, Peoria, where he had been a patient one day. He had suffered from an infected blood vessel while on a recent trip to Florida but was apparently on the way to recovery.

Since his ordination into the ministry in 1917, he served in various conference boards and committees, having also been superintendent of the Home Mission in Chicago. He was president of the Mennonite Board of Education from 1924-29 and treasurer from 1933-34.

He was born in Tazewell county Ill. Feb. 24, 1886, a son of Peter and Magdalena Esch Schertz. His first wife, Martha Imhoff Schertz died May 2, 1947, and on April 17, 1951, he married Ruth Springer of Hopedale. Surviving are his wife, four sons four sisters, two brothers and 10 grandchildren.
