Father, Son Drown in California Mountain Stream
San Jose, Calif. — A weekend camping trip to the mountains became a scene of tragedy for the Orval Schenkosky family, members of the Mennonite Brethren Church here.
Schenkosky and his son Lyle, 15, both drowned July 1 in a turbulent stream near Sonora, Calif.
The pair were standing near the river, swollen by melted snow. The youth slipped on the bank and fell into the torrent. His father went in after him.
Schenkosky’s body was recovered, and funeral services were held July 5 at the San Jose M. B. Church. The boy’s body had not yet been found.
Immediate survivors are: Mrs. Schenkosky and a daughter, Loree, 19. The widow is a daughter of Mrs. H. H. Cornelson and the late Mr. Cornelsen of Hillsboro, Kan. Other Kansas relatives include a brother, Raymond Cornelsen of Hillsboro, and a sister, Mrs. Walter Penner of Newton. The Cornelsens and Penners flew to California for the funeral.
