— Family members at North Newton received word Sunday that Richard H. Schenkel, 57, of Albuquerque, N. M. had been killed in a one-car auto accident early that morning. He was married to Mildred Voth, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. J. J. Voth, North Newton, and for the past 20 years had taught in the Albuquerque public schools. Mrs. Schenkel also teaches there. Mr. Schenkel was a native of Bazine, Kan. and a member of the United Methodist Church. Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Barbara, of the home, and a sister, Mrs. Victor Dewald of Bazine. The body was sent here, and final services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Bethel College Church, with Rev. Esko Loewen officiating.

RICHARD H. SCHENKEL

Richard H. Schenkel was born on Nov. 23, 1912, in Bazine, Kan., to Henry and Mollie Fritzler Schenkel, who preceded him in death. Richard attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia the following five years where earned the B.S. in History and M.S. in Education.

From 1940 to 1942 Richard taught at Claflin, Kan. where he met Mildred Voth, also a teacher in the high school there. They were married on June 12, 1942 in the Bethel College Church, North Newton, Kan.

In 1942 he entered military service, attaining the rank of Master Sargeant [sic Sergeant] before an honorable discharge in 1945. His military duty was fulfilled at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan.

Richard and Mildred both taught in the Longford, Kan. High School until 1949, when they moved to Albuquerque. He was in his twentieth year of teaching in the junior high schools there when he met his untimely death in a one-car accident early Sunday morning, May 17, 1970.

Richard and Mildred celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in the fall of 1967, sharing the occasion of the golden anniversary of Mildred’s parents, Rev. and Mrs. John J. Voth of North Newton. Enjoying the event with her parents was their daughter Barbara Ann.

Richard was a member of the Central United Methodist Church of Albuquerque, where he and his family were regular worshipers and participants in various church activities.

Richard was an avid sports fan and an active golfer. He was a devoted teacher who was deeply appreciated by the many students who studied Social Science under him. He will be missed by his students and colleagues in the schools of Albuquerque.

Richard is survived by his wife Mildred and daughter Barbara Ann of Albuquerque and a sister, Alice Dewald of Bazine, Kan.

Funeral services were held at the Bethel College Church, North Newton, on May 20 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Esko Loewen officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
