MRS. MARIE SCHATTENBERG

Marie (Meya) Schattenberg, daughter of Wilhelm and Henrietta Meya, was born June 30, 1883 in Rydzeven, East Prussia, Germany. She was baptized on July 5, 1883 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rotwalde, Germany, and was confirmed in the same church on Aug. 28, 1897. She attended school in her native country of Germany.

On Aug. 3, 1908 she was married to Herman C. Schattenberg in Berlin. Very shortly after their marriage they came to America and settled in Grand Island, Nebr., where they operated a bakery. Returning to Germany in 1914 for a visit, they decided that they would like to remain there to make their home. Mr. Schattenberg then returned to the United states to sell his business, with the intention n of going back to Germany to his wife and family. While he was here, however, the war broke out and it was only after encountering considerable difficulty that Mrs. Schattenberg was able to join her husband again in Grand Island in 1915. After this they operated bakeries in various places in Nebraska and later in Kansas.

In 1925 the family moved to Halstead, which has been their home since that time. Here they also operated a bakery for several years until the time of their retirement. Here, on Oct. 8, 1933 both Mr. and Mrs. Schattenberg joined the First Mennonite Church, transferring their membership from the Inman Mennonite Church, where they lived prior to coming to Halstead.

Mrs. Schattenberg was a person of great faith in God, placing her trust and confidence in Him in all circumstances.

She passed away in the Halstead Hospital on July 13, 1960 after a prolonged illness. Her husband preceded her in death on August 25, 1956. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and one sister.

She is survived by her son Carl, daughter Gertrude, two grandsons, two nephews and one niece.
