FRED SCHARTNER <h3></center>
Fred Schartner, oldest son of the late Rev. Jacob and Helena Unruh Schartner, was born on a farm near Marion, S. D. on Feb. 4, 1888. He received his elementary schooling in Turner County.
On April 29, 1906 he was baptized upon his confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ by his grandfather, Elder Friedrich Schartner, and was received into the membership of the Karlswalder Mennonite Church. After this church was dissolved, he joined the Bethesda Mennonite Church of Marion, S. D. on Aug. 19, 1941. Here he served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher for many years, and also on the board of trustees. He spent much time in prayer, in reading Christian literature and God's Word. He read through the Bible 17 times and the New Testament 43 times. This was his source of spiritual strength. For many years he served on the Mennonite Cemetery Board. During World War I he served his country as a conscientious objector.
The family moved to Marion in the year 1952, where he lived until the Lord called him Home.
He had been ill for a number of years and was under the doctor's care. He had several light strokes previously which handicapped him greatly.
His parents, two brothers and five sisters preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn four sisters, Eva (Mrs. Diet. Engbrecht), Mollie (Mrs. Joseph Hofer), Minnie and Caroline; two brothers, Tobias and Jake; two brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law; two nephews and seven nieces.
He reached the age of 74 years and six days. His unexpected death came as a result of a heart attack at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 10, 1962. We will miss him greatly, but we are assured that he has entered his heavenly home to be with the Lord forever.
Funeral services were held Feb. 14, 1962, at the Bethesda Mennonite Church. Words of comfort were spoken by Rev. T. A. van der Smissen, Rev. Johnny Reimer and Ed. Duerksen. Music was furnished by a male quartet in charge of Eldon Smith and a mixed quartet in charge of Benj. J. Tieszen. — The Bereaved Family.
