SUSIE SCHARTNER

Susie Schartner, our dear sister and daughter of Rev. Jacob and Helena Unruh Schartner, was born on a farm near Marion, S. D. on June 13, 1895. The family moved to Marion in 1952, where she lived until her death.

On May 9, 1915 she was baptized upon her confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ by her father, Rev. Jacob Schartner, and accepted as a member of the Karlswalder Mennonite church. On Aug. 10, 1941, after this church was dissolved, she was received into the followship [sic] of the Bethesda Mennonite church. She remained a faithful member until her death.

As much as her health permitted she regularly attended the services of the church and helped in the work of the Lord. She had a great love for missions and was active in the work of the ladies mission society when it was possible for her to do so.

She submitted to a major operation on May 15, 1934. She was under the doctor's care for a number of years because of high blood pressure and a weak heart. On March 27, 1959 she had an operation on her tongue because of cancer. She had great hopes for recovery, but the Lord saw fit to lay an affliction upon her. Her speech was affected because of the operation, and later cancer settled in her throat and mouth, which caused her death. Although the pain was nearly unbearable at times, she was very patient and put her trust in the Lord. Many times she mentioned the nearness of the Lord, and she had the blessed assurance that when she would depart from this earth she would be with her Savior.

She was bedfast 10 weeks, and remained conscious till the end. She was a lover of music and found comfort when songs were sung for her.

The Lord released her from all suffering and pain as the old year ended and the new year entered. Her soul took flight to her heavenly home at 12:50 a.m. Jan. 1, 1960.

She reached the age of 64 years, six months and 19 days. Her parents, two brothers and thee sisters preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her departure five sisters and three brothers, one sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law, two nephews and seven nieces, as well as many relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Jan. 5, 1960. words of comfort based on John 1 were spoken by the officiating pastor, Rev. T. A. van der Smissen, at the funeral home. At the Bethesda Mennonite church the pastor's message was based on John 11:17-27. A quartet in charge of Eldon Smith furnished music. Another quartet in charge of Benj. V. Thieszen sang at the cemetery. — The Family.
