Rev. Jacob Schartner

Rev. Jacob Schartner was born June 12, 1866, in Russia, Ostrog in the village Karlswalde. His mother died when he had reached the age of eight years. He emigrated to America with his father in the year 1874 and they settled down soon after this near Marion, So. Dak. The following year his father married again and he received anotehr good mother through this marriage.

He was baptized March 29, 1885, upon the confession of his faith by Elder Friedrich Schartner, his father, and became a member of the mennonite Church. He enterd the Holy bonds of matrimony Feb. 17, 1887, with Helena Unruh. They shared the joys and disappointments in married life for 53 years. To this union were born 14 children, 5 sons and 9 daughters, of which 2 sons and 2 daughters preceded him in death. Daughter Lydia was called to her heavenly home 8 months before his departure. Her death caused him great pain.

Rev. Schartner was called and ordained to the ministry in the year 1908. After he had served 3 years faithfully as a minister of the gospel, he was ordained as an Elder in 1911, in which ministry he served faithfully for 32 years. He read the Bible through many times and found much comfort and strength by doing so. He had a light stroke Feb. 12, 1938, which had paralyzed his right side somewhat. Last summer he again became ill. On Sept. 29, 1940, he collapsed behind the pulpit. Doctors found that he was suffering from cancer of the stomach. They declared his case incurable. Thereafter he began to fail rapidly in strength, and was bedridden for the last 5 weeks. During his illness he ate very little and did not eat any food the last 35 days, only drank a little now and then. He bore his suffering very patiently.

God relieved him from all suffering December 21, 1940, at 10:30 P. M. He had reached an age of 74 years, 6 months and 9 days. He leaves to mourn his death his griefstricken wife; 3 sons, 7 daughters.

The funeral service was held in the Bethesda church. Words of comfort were spoken by the Revs. John J. A. Schrag, A. P. Waltner, and J. A. Thieszen. Rev. Derk Tieszen led in a closing prayer. rev. M. A. Kroeker had charge of the service at the cemetery.
