Mutter Helena Schartner. (Marion S. Dak.) Tochter von Cornelius und Eva Decker-Unruh ward am 30. Jan. 1872 in Rußland geboren und kam 1875 mit Eltern nach Marion, Süd Dakota. 1886 ward sie von Aelt. Friedrich Schartner getauft und Glied der Mennonitengemeinde. Am 17. Febr. 1887 heiratete sie Jakob Schartner und sie durften 53 Jahre lang zusammen pilgern bis Aelt. Jakob Schartner am 21. Dez. 1940 starb. Als die Gemeinde aufgelöst wurde schloß die Heimgerufene sich der Bethesda Mennonitengemeinde an am 10. Aug. 1941, wo sie Glied blieb. Vor Jahren bekam sie ein Krebsleiden im Gesicht, ward aber vor 16 Jahren völlig davon geheilt. Ueber 2 Jahre hatte sie ein Herzleiden und am Karfreitagabend nach dem Essen bekam sie am Tisch einen Herzschlag und sie starb im Alter von 72 J. 2 M. und 19 Tagen. Es trauern um sie 3 Söhne, 7 Töchter, 2 Schwiegersöhne, 1 Schwiegertochter und 6 Enkel.

MRS. JACOB SCHARTNER

Helena Schartner, youngest daughter of Cornelius and Eva Becker Unruh, was born January 30, 1872, in the Village Carolswalde [sic Karolswalde], Russia. She came to America with her parents in the year 1875 and later they settled on a farm near Marion, S. D. She was baptized April 18, 1866, by Elder Friedrich Schartner upon her confession of faith, and was received into the membership of the Mennonite church.

She entered the holy bonds of matrimony on February 17, 1887. For 53 years she shared the joys and sorrows of married life. She became the mother of 14 children, five sons and nine daughters, of whom two sons and two daughters preceded her in death. Her husband preceded her in death also. He died December 21, 1940.

When her husband Elder Jacob Schartner died, his church was dissolved, so she united with the Bethesda church, August 10, 1941, were [sic] she was a faithful member. She gladly attended the church services whenever her health permitted. She lived in widowhood for five years. In this time she experienced many hours of loneliness. She spent much time in reading God's Word, which gave her great comfort. Years ago she had a heavy burden to bear due to a painful cancer in her face, of which she was fully cured 16 years ago. For more than two years she had been afflicted with heart trouble, at times more seriously than at others. However, she felt fairly well the last two weeks.

On Good Friday at 4:30 p. m., after the family had finished lunch and were still sitting at the table, her heart failed and her soul sped for the heavenly home. She had passed on without a struggle and without saying a word. She and no-one else had suspected she would be called so unexpectedly. She reached the age of 74 years, two months and 19 days.

She is mourned by the children, three sons and seven daughters and six grandchildren. Two brothers, one sister and two grandchildren preceded her in death.

Words of comfort and admonition were spoken by Ministers H. J. Brown, A. P. Waltner, M. A. Kroeker and J. A. Tieszen. Rev. A. P. Waltner had charge of the service at the cemetery.
