• Rev. Jacob F. Sawatzky, 84, retired minister who had resided in Newton since 1943, died early Friday at Bethel Deaconess Hospital where he had been a patient since March 7. Death was caused by a cerebral hemorrhage. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church, where funeral services were conducted Monday forenoon by the pastor, Rev. Arnold Epp. A native of Winkler, Manitoba, Rev. Sawatzky was ordained to the ministry in 1908 and served churches at Herbert, Sask., Bloomfield, Mont. and Madrid, Neb., retiring from the active ministry in 1943. For the past number of years he had been employed at the MCC Center in North Newton, helping to pack relief goods. Surviving are his widow, Helena; two daughters and six sons; three sisters and one brother, all in Canada; 29 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Among the sons are Rev. Victor Sawatzky of Newton and Rev. Ben Sawatzky, missionary to India.
