Accident at Railroad Crossing Results in Death and Injury

MRS. FRANK SAWATZKY, PLUM COULEE, MAN., INSTANTLY KILLED; SON INJURED

Plum Coulee, Man. — Mrs. Frank Sawatzky, 69, of Gnadenthal was killed instantly, when the car in which she was riding with her son Rev. Frank Sawatzky, was struck by an east bound passenger train of the C. P. R. at a level crossing a half mile west of plum Coulee, just before noon, Friday morning, Feb. 26.

The driver was brought into Plum Coulee, unconscious, and later taken to the Winkler hospital. Dr. H. McGavin, local corner [sic], said an inquest would not be necessary as the death appeared to be accidental.

Mr. Sawatzky's condition is serious.

Funeral services were held in the Gnadenthal church, Sunday afternoon, with Rev. John and Rev. Abram Bueckert officiating. The local choir was in attendance. Burial was made in the Gnadenthal cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Sawatzky came to Altona in 1923 from Gnadenthal, Russia. After residing here for a few years they moved to Blumenort and from there to Gnadenthal.

Mrs. Sawazky is survived by five children; one son and four daughters; Rev. Frank Sawatzky, Gnadenthal, Helen, Mrs. G. G. Enns, Reinland; Margaret, Mrs. Died. P. Peters, Blumenort; Anne, Mrs. John P. Peters, Gnadenthal; and Neta at home.

Mr. Sawatzky preceded her in death six years ago; also one daughter, Mary (Mrs. Dan P. Peters of Blumenort, a few years ago.

The children and about 25 grandchildren were all present at the funeral, except Rev. Sawatzky, who was still confined to the Winkler hospital. His condition at the time of the funeral had improved slightly.
