EDWIN J. ROTH

Edwin J. Roth, lifelong resident of Morton, Ill. and a prominent stock and grain farmer, died suddenly Jan. 17, 1964, in Proctor Community Hospital, Peoria, Ill., at the age of 77 years and 16 days. He was born Jan. 1, 1887, in Groveland Township, Tazewell County, Ill., the son of Joseph P. and Amelia Ropp Roth.

Early in life he accepted Christ as his Saviour. At that time services were held in the Railroad Schoolhouse, a center of fellowship and worship in the rural community of his grandfather, Jacob Ropp, in Elm Grove Township. Edwin helped to organize and build a new church, and became one of the charter members of Bethel Mennonite Church when it was dedicated in 1910. He was a continuing faithful and supportive member. Several years ago he transferred his membership to Calvary Mennonite Church, Washington, Ill. He was a man of steadfast Christian character.

He was a breeder of registered Shorthorn cattle and Poland China and Hampshire hogs, and also raised sheep and horses. He was an excellent horseman, and was progressive in the adaptation of better methods of farming. He liked to build and did much building, rebuilding, and repairing of his farm buildings.

He servd as a director of local grade schools in Groveland Township for 22 years. He cheerfully gave many hours in helping to provide physical, educational , and recreational facilities for all school children in his community.

As he gradually retired from active farming, his interest in growing things was actively pursued in an orchard, large garden and yard. Each year he planted trees. He continued to be expert in woodworking in many ways.

He was married to Fannie M. Imhoff of Washington, Ill. on Feb. 8, 1912. She and four children survive: one son, Melvin E., and three daughters, Frances E. Miller, Irene Roth, and Alice Marie Roth. He has two brothers, Austin D. Roth and Wilbur J. Roth. Two sisters preceded him in death.

A builder in his home and community, his perseverance, steadfast faith, and joy of living were an encouragement to everyone who knew him.
