— Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Bertha Wyse Roth, mother of Mrs. Melvin Gingerich of Goshen. Ind., who died at her home in Wayland, Iowa, Nov. 15. Dr. and Mrs. Gingerich gained a large circle of friends here during the years he was a member of the faculty of Bethel College. Mrs. Gingerich and her sister, Mrs. C. L. Graber, went to Iowa to be with their mother on Nov. 7 and remained with her until her death. A third child, Arthur W. Roth of Orrtanna, Pa., arrived just a few hours before Mrs. Roth passed away and had the privilege of a short conversation at her bedside.

MRS. BERTHA WYSE ROTH

Bertha Wyse Roth, daughter of the late John and Lydia Shantz Wyse, was born near Wayland, Henry County, Iowa, on July 12, 1874, and departed this life at the Henry County Memorial hospital at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, on Nov. 15, 1949, having attained the age of 75 years, four months and three days. She was the second oldest child in a family of five children, left orphans at an early age. Two of her brothers and her only sister preceded her in death.

She suffered a heart attack at home a week before her death and was taken to the hospital where everything was done that loving hands and medical skill could do. The call came suddenly at 1:45 a. m. on Nov. 15 that her life work was finished and she should come Home to rest.

She became a Christian as a young girl, uniting with the Sugar Creek Mennonite church where she remained a faithful member throughout her life.

On July 29, 1892, she was united in marriage to Jacob G. Roth with whom she lived in happy union for 55 years. He predeceased her on Nov. 16, 1947, just one day less than two years ago. On July 29, 1942, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in Wayland where their family and friends came to join them in observing this happy occasion.

They spent all these years in the Wayland community with the exception of one year when they lived in Wayne county, Ohio. Most of the time they lived on their farm three miles east of Wayland. On retiring in 1929 they moved to East Wayland which was their home since that time. Five children came to bless this union. Two boys, Irvin Jay and Emery Leon died in early childhood.

She was a loving mother and a kind, friendly neighbor. She was interested in the work of the church and served as a Sunday school teacher for years. The work of the sewing circle was a delight to her. Like Dorcas of old, she made many artistic and useful things with her hands that will be a beautiful tribute to her memory.

Her sudden homegoing is mourned by her three children, Nina Amanda. Mrs. C. L. Graber, and Verna Mae, Mrs. Melvin Gingerich, both of Goshen, Ind., and Arthur W. of Orrtanna. Penna. She leaves one brother, Amos Wyse, who lived with her at Wayland; 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren, and besides these a host of other relatives and friends whose fellowship had been her delight during all the years of her life.

"Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them." Rev. 14:13.

Funeral services were held at the Sugar Creek Mennonite church at 2:00 p. m. on Thur., Nov. 17, 1949, in charge of Simon Gingerich and Willard Leichty, the home ministers. She was laid to rest by the side of her husband in the cemetery near the church.
