Goshen, Ind. — Word was received at Goshen College that Barbara Ann Roeschley, 21, died in a drowning accident Sunday morning, May 25, in Costa Rica where she was participating in the college's Study Service Trimester.

Miss Roeschley, daughter of Orie and Beulah Roeschley of Flanagan, Ill., had taken part in commencement activities here in April and was completing requirements for a B.A. degree in Social Work. She was a 1973 graduate of Hesston College (Kansas) and an active member of the Waldo Mennonite Church, Flanagan.

A memorial service was held in Costa Rica, and a service was conducted at the college Tuesday morning. The final service will be held May 29 at the Waldo church.

Goshen, Ind. — It was learned here that the drowning of Barbara Ann Roeschley, 21-year-old Goshen College senior, on May 25 in Costa Rica took place at Quepos, a small resort town on the Pacific coast.

The 18 Goshen students in the Study Service Trimester program in Costa Rica and their faculty leaders were on the weekend field trip to Quepos and were about ready to return to San Jose when Miss Roeschley and two other women students decided to take a final swim.

Those on shore soon noticed that the three were in trouble, and threw out life preservers attached to ropes. Two were pulled to safety but Miss Roeschley could not be reached in time.

The SST students and faculty held a memorial service in San Jose on Monday evening, May 16. On Tuesday memorial services were held in the Church-Chapel at Goshen College and also at the Spanish Language Institute in San Jose, in Spanish. Memorial services and burial took place May 29 at the Waldo Mennonite Church, Flanagan, Ill.

SSurviving in the immediate family are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orie Roeschley of Flanagan, three brothers and two sisters.
