DEATH TAKES SEARS, ROEBUCK CO. CO-FOUNDER
FOR YEARS one of the most-used books in the homes of millions of common folks was the mail order catalog.
On June 19, A. C. Roebuck, 84 year old co-founder of Sears, Roebuck & Co., died in a Chicago hospital. The aged mail order merchant had been living in Tunjunga, Ca., since his retirement in 1940 and was visiting a daughter in Evanston, ill., when he was stricken with a heart attack.
Roebuck became partner in the business started by the late Richard W. Sears in 1890, but left after a few years. In 1933 he rejoined the company in a public relations capacity, until his permanent retirement seven years later.
The store, at first housed in a little room, has expanded into a multi-million dollar merchandising concern in these past 50 years.
