Milverton, Ont. — A family quarrel in the household of Joseph Jantzi, rural Milverton, ended early Saturday afternoon, Aug. 19, in double murder and suicide.

Victims of the murder were Ontario Provincial Police Const. James Hamilton, 37, of Listowel, and Carl Rocher, 78, a justice of the peace officer in Listowel, both shot by Mr. Jantzi. the killing ended when Mr. Jantzi took his own life.

Huddled in the upper part of the barn, 13-year-old Ken Jantzi peeked through a crack in the wall and witnessed the shooting. Full of fear, he darted from the barn and into a grain field, and remained hidden in the field for some time.

Mrs. Jantzi had left earlier for the neighbors to call police.

Police found a high-powered rifle and a 12-gauge shotgun beside Mr. Jantzi's body. An incoherent suicide note was found also. Three other loaded guns were found in the house. Neighbors said Mr. Jantzi was an avid hunter of deer, bear, and moose.

Joseph G. Jantzi, 42, was born near here in 1925. Surviving besides his wife, the former Vera Zehr, are sons Wayne, 16, and Kenneth, 13; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John J. Jantzi of rural Wellesley; two brothers and one sister. He was a member of the Mapleview Mennonite Church, Wellesley, where a memorial service was held Aug. 22.
