White Stanleyville Hostages Killed by Congo Rebels

Eighteen of the nearly 300 white hostages held in Stanleyville by Congo rebels were reported killed in a wholesale massacre attempt as a national liberation force and Belgian paratroops were closing in on the city.

The hostages had been herded into Lumumba Square to be mowed down by machinegun fire. A large number were reported seriously wounded.

Among the dead was Dr. Paul Carlson, a medical missionary whom the rebels had accused of being an American spy. Desperate negotiations had been set in motion last week by the U. S. government to obtain the release of Dr. Carlson. Also killed was Phyllis Rine, a missionary from Cincinnati, Ohio.
