DEATH CLAIMS ONE OF FEW REMAINING PIONEERS AT HENDERSON, NEB.

Henderson, Neb. — Death removed one of the few remaining pioneers who arrived here with the Mennonite immigrant group in 1874 with the passing of G. G. Rempel, 85. In failing health for some time, he died Aug. 19 at a Beatrice, Neb. rest home.

Funeral services were conducted Aug. 22 at the Bethesda Mennonite church.

Survivors include his wife Maria and eight children.

GERHARD G. REMPEL

Gerhard G. Rempel, son of Gerhard and Katharina (Epp) Rempel was born in Paulsheim, Russia August 13, 1874 and passed from this life to be with the Lord on August 19, 1959 at 3:55 p.m. at the Mennonite hospital, Beatrice, Neb.

In 1877 he emigrated with his parents to this country and settled in the Henderson, Neb. community where he spent the rest of his life. His schooling was limited, but experience proved to be a good teacher and often he helped us with our school work. He was active in church and civic affairs. For many years he served on the school board and on the church board, and also taught in the Sunday school for more than 25 years.

Upon his confession of faith he was baptized and received as a member into the Bethesda Mennonite church on June 2, 1895. He remained a faithful member until the Lord called him home. On Feb. 7, 1901, he was united in holy wedlock with Maria Thieszen. To this union were born ten children, of whom two died in infancy.

Father was a farmer until 1930 when he retired and moved into Henderson. He had a deep interest in the church and its program. To us children he was also a wise counsellor. Many times he wept as he saw his [line repeated in original] weakness come upon him. Often we sang with him the old familiar hymns to cheer his dreary hours. We mourn his passing, yet we rejoice and praise the Lord that He has called him home, relieving him of all earthly suffering.

He spent the last few months at the Mennonite hospital at Beatrice where he died. He attained the age of 85 years and six days.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife Maria, who is at present hospitalized in the Henderson hospital; two sons, Gerhard and wife Olga, Jacob and wife Sarah; six daughters and their husbands, Marie, Mrs. Jacob Regier, Elisabeth, Mrs. Louise C. Wiebe, Katharina, Mrs. Henry G. Hiebner, Sarah, Mrs. Abr. E. Epp, Anna, Mrs. Henry L. Faw, Lena, Mrs. Thomas Hiebner, 32 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; one sister, Gertrude, Mrs. John A. Peters; three half-brothers and one half-sister, many relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were two children, Margaret and Cornelius, and two grandchildren. — The Family.
