CHARLOTTE L. REGIER

Charlotte L. Regier was born May 15, 1906 near Whitewater, Kan. to John and Emilie Wiebe Regier.

She graduated from the Bethel Academy in 1927 and from the college in 1944. In 1961 she received her master's degree from the University of Illinois and joined the National Association of Social Workers.

After finishing college she worked for some time at the State Hospital in Marlborough, N. J. After that she was with MCC for three years, serving at two different children's homes in France. Before she left Europe she studied in England for a short time.

When she returned she took a course as a psychiatric aide at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kan. and became a member of the Menninger Foundation. She stayed on to work in the Topeka State Hospital for three years. After this she did some private nursing. For a while she took care of Mrs. Shaefer, mother of the president of Shaefer pen and pencil manufacturers. From there she went to Manteno State Hospital in Illinois. Her sensitivity to and understanding of other people's ills stood her in good stead when taking care of mental patients.

After receiving her master's degree she worked at the University of Illinois Hospital for nine years as a medical social worker certified by the State of Illinois. She had hoped to finish ten years, but her health did not permit.

In December 1972 she moved to Friendly Acres in Newton, Kan. where she lived until her death.

Early in life she joined the Emmaus Mennonite Church near Whitewater. While working in Topeka she joined the Methodist church. In Chicago she became a member of the Central Church, an interdenominational group. She remained a member until her death. The minister, Kenneth Hildebrandt, was a great inspiration to her through the years.

After she came to Newton, she attended the Bethel College church whenever her health permitted.

She was quite ill last fall but made a remarkable recovery. But often during the years, she had abdominal pains which during the last few weeks became continuous. She was taken to the Bethel Hospital a few hours before her death on June 13, 1974.

She was the first of six brothers and sisters to leave. Those surving are Marie J. Frantz of North Newton, Kan., Hans E. and Luella Regier Galesburg, Ill., Alfred H. and Ione Regier of Whitewater, Margaret I. Regier of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Minna D. Regier of Evanston, Ill. — The Family.
