Accidents From East to West Take Toll of Deaths, Injuries

Traffic accidents have again taken a heavy toll of dead and injured in Mennonite communities across the nation, according to reports coming to the Review. Farm accidents, though apparently not as numerous have added to the toll.

A two-car crash near Balko, Okla. on Sept. 24 resulted in instant death for Ruben Frantz, 56, farmer and father of four children. Funeral services were held at the Balko M. B. Church.

Near Archbold, Ohio, a car driven by Roger Miller, 21, and a truck driven by Denver Stamm collided at an intersection on Sept. 20, fatally injuring the Miller youth. Stamm suffered a broken back. Roger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Miller, was returning from the funeral of a relative, Mrs. Chris Rupp who died of injuries received in a highway crash which also claimed the life of her husband.

Roger Dale Regier, 22, of Fresno, Calif., son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Regier of Henderson, Neb., met instant death Sept. 22 when the motorcycle he was riding to work collided head-on with an auto. He leaves a young wife, the former Ruth Buller.

Near Plain City, Ohio, eight-year-old Joseph E. Troyer was killed when the tractor he was driving struck a gate post, throwing him under a rear wheel. He was a son of Eli N. Troyers of the Beachy Church, Plain City.

The list of injured includes Dennis Lehman, 43, Berne, Ind. farmer who suffered a mangled foot and broken leg when pulled into the web of a self-unloading wagon.

Dexter Friesen, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Alden Friesen of York, Neb., who was seriously hurt when he fell 14 feet from a hay mow and struck a tractor;

Fanny Ellen Mullet, 18, of Middlebury, Ind. and Magdalena Graber, 17, of Millersburg, Ind., injured in a one-car accident near Goshen.

ROGER DALE REGIER

Roger Dale Regier, son of John R. and Hannah Kliewer Regier, was born on Feb. 28, 1938 at Henderson, Neb. Here he spent his childhood days, attending the grade school and also graduating from the Henderson High School.

He was a regular attendent [sic] in Sunday school and church services from his boyhood days. As a young boy he became convicted of his sin under the preaching of the Word of God. He realized that he was lost without Christ, and his mother helped him by showing him the way of salvation from the Scripture. He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and on Sept. 15, 1951, was baptized and united with the Mennonite Brethren Church. As a high school youth he had a great burden for prayer and gave some talks on the subject at the Christian Endeavor services.

After attending Tabor College at Hillsboro, Kansas for one year, he was united in holy matrimony with Ruth Buller. We spent our first days together in Hillsboro, Kansas, where he continued his education at Tabor College.

Since he was conscientiously opposed to taking part in war, he volunteered to serve his country in alternate service. We spent two years in Topeka, Kansas, where he served in the Menninger Hospital and for the State Board of Health. In Topeka he took part in church activities and was especially active in the Welcome Club, a Christian organization for Negro children.

In February of 1960 we moved to Reedley, Calif. where he worked for the Enns Pontiac Company. About four months ago, he accepted a job at the Herman Ther. Pontiac Company in Fresno. He was on his way to work Friday morning, Sept. 22, 1961, about 7:45 a.m. when he met with an accident and without an opportunity to bid farewell, he left us to be with the Lord.

Only a few weeks ago we had united with the Mennonite Brethren Church of Reedley for fellowship. He took active part in the Sunday school work of the church and served in the Boys Brigade Club.

We lived happily married for only four years, 11 months, and 24 days. He reached the age of 23 years, six months and 24 days.

Those who remain to mourn his departure are his wife, Mrs. Ruth Regier of Reedley; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John R. Regier of Henderson, Neb.; his parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Buller of Lushton, Neb.; three brothers, Leo, Ronnie and Allen, of the home address; one grandmother, Mrs. John H. Regier of Henderson; three uncles, five aunts, and many other relatives and friends.

The memorial service was held in the Mennonite Brethren Church of Reedley on Sept. 26, with Rev. Dan Friesen and Rev. Henry L. Janzen officiating.
