● Graveside and memorial services for Luella Smith Regier, 80, of North Newton, were held May 12. The graveside services took place at Emmaus Mennonite Church Cemetery near Whitewater. The memorial services were held at the Bethel College Mennonite Church, North Newton, with Darrell Fast and D. C. Wedel officiating. A former teacher and social worker, she died May 10 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton. She had been president of the Newton Council for Retarded Children and was a co-founder of the Kansas Association of Parents of Retarded Children. She taught in public schools until 1954 and established a school for retarded children in Harvey County. She was The Newton Kansan’s “Woman of the Year in Education” for 1956, assistant registrar at Bethel College, 1941-1944, and registrar, 1944-1945, and a social case worker at Prairie View Mental Health Center. Survivors include her husband, Hans E. Regier, one son, John Elliot, of North Newton; one stepdaughter, Marian I. Piper of San Antonio, Texas; and one grandson.
