HOMER B. REED

Dr. Homer B. Reed, 85, died Jan. 23, 1972 at Hadley Memorial Hospital, Hays, Kan. He was professor emeritus of the Division of Education and Psychology at Fort Hays State College, having taught there from 1928 to 1956

Born Aug. 16, 1886, the son of Elias W. and Mary Detweiler Blosser Reed, n Mahoning county, Ohio, Dr. Reed was reared on a farm near North Lima, Ohio. He attended Goshen College, earned his A.B. and A.M degrees at Indiana University, and in 1912, the Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Chicago. He also did special graduate work at Columbia University, N. Y., in 1913, and was a Fellow in Psychiatry at Kansas University medical Center, 1951-52.

Before coming to Hays he taught at the University of Illinois, University of Idaho, Colorado College of Education, University of Pittsburgh, and Gunnison, Colo.

During his professorship at Hays, 40 of his psychology majors and master degree students advanced into eminent positions in the U. S. Two of these are his sons, Dr. James C. and Dr. Homer B. Reed, Jr., both with the New England Medical Center, Boston, Mass. He has authored three college textbooks, 40 articles for professional journals, and within the past two years two historical booklets for the Kansas Psychological Assn.

He was co-founder of the Fort Hays Psychological Clinic, helped organize and promote the High Plains Mental Health Clinic in Western Kansas and co-authored the once widely used Reed-Tracy Teaching Tests. The Homer B. Reed Adjustment and Training Center for rehabilitation of the older handicapped is a living memorial to his work in Hays.

After retiring at Hays, he served as visiting professor at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque; Wooster College, Ohio; the University of Istanbul, Turkey for thee years; and Tarkio College, Mo. He was a member of the Hays Presbyterian Church and the Rotary club.

Dr. Reed is survived by his wife, Elam Carey Reed, of the home in Hays and their two sons; four daughters, the children of his first wife, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Seruto of Temple City, Calif., Mrs. Kathryn Daughaday of San Diego, Mrs. Margaret Schwein of Atchison, Kan., and Mrs. Anne Jansen of Joliet, Ill.; 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Menno (Adah) Wenger, Goshen, Ind., Mrs. Will (Luella) Jones, El Dorado, Kan. and Mrs. Jesse (Esther) Riffe, Texhoma, Oklahoma; and one brother, Dr. Paul Reed, Holllywood, Calif.
