MELVIN RATZLAFF

Melvin Ratzlaff, our beloved son and brother, was born on a farm near Freeman, South Dakota, January 1, 1926, and departed from this life June 21, 1951, at 6 p.m. at the age of 25 years, five months and 20 days. His parents’ farm near Freeman has been his home during his entire life.

He received his elementary school training in a rural school near his home and his high school training in Freeman academy. After graduation he attended Freeman Junior college one year and then taught a rural school for one year. Following his year of teaching, he returned to college to continue his training but had to discontinue school because of failing health. That was a great disappointment to him because he had hoped, after completing his training, to enter Christian service.

During a series of evangelistic meetings in 1943, Melvin accepted Christ as his personal Saviour. On September 19, 1944, he was baptized and became a member of the Mennonite Brethren church. He has served his church in various ways but in a special way as Sunday school superintendent of the Junior department for three years.

Melvin enjoyed normal health until about four years ago when he became seriously ill with a kidney infection which the doctors later diagnosed as chronic nephritis. This disease, together with other complications, caused his death. Although he entered different hospitals and was examined by many doctors seeking to regain his health the Lord had planned it differently and saw fit, rather than restore his health, to take him to His eternal Home.

To mourn his departure he leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter J. Ratzlaff, two sisters, Lillian and Frances, and one brother, Donald, all at home; and a large number of relatives and friends.

Since last December Melvin has been confined to the house most of the time. DuDring [sic] these months the trials, conflicts, and struggles have been many, but we are glad that there is a release from suffering, pain, and all conflicts. We will miss him but rejoice in the hope that we will see him again, for just before his passing he assured us that there was perfect peace between his soul and the Saviour.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 24, at the Mennonite Brethren church with Rev. G. S. Warkentin and Rev. M. A. Kroeker officiating. Songs were rendered by a men's quartet and by Werner Kroeker.

Pall bearers were Elmer Ratzlaff, Irvin Ratzlaff, Albert Loewen, Willis Ratzlaff, Myron Fast, and Ronald Unruh, all first cousins.

Interment was made in the Mennonite cemetery with Walters funeral home in charge.
