JOHN RAHN
John Rahn, a long-time member of the First Mennonite church at Upland, Calif., died Nov.14, 1959.
Mr. Rahn was born in Russia and came to America in 1908. He spent three years in Oklahoma, in and around Gotebo, before coming to Upland in 1911. He resided in Upland and Cucamonga, respectively, except for three years in Paso Robles.
In 1915 he was married to Miss Selma Weber of Cucamonga, the marriage taking place in the bride's parental home. They established a home nearby and resided there until his death.
Two children were born to this union, a daughter, Mary Ellen, now the wife of Walter Mertz, with their four children recently moved from Upland to Wasco, and a son Marvin, who with his wife and three children lives in Manhattan Beach.
By occupation Mr. Rahn was a groceryman. After clerking for others, he established his own grocery store 30 years ago on 9th Street in Upland. Several years ago ill health forced him to retire and he sold his store. Since then he and his wife had lived in quiet retirement.
In his illness he resorted to surgery, which gave him only temporary relief. The last two weeks were spent in the hospital. Various complications evidenced themselves, and when hypostatic pneumonia developed, his weakened body could not overcome the onslaught and he succumbed on the morning of Nov. 14, at the age of 75 years.
Not only his family will sadly miss him but the church has also sustained a great loss. He was active in church as long as health permitted and supported it loyally in all departments. He was also very generous in supporting missions and the General Conference Institutions.
Funeral services were conducted in the First Mennonite church of Upland on Nov. 17 by his pastor, Rev. Paul Goering, followed by entombment in the Bellvue Mausoleum.
