Retired Minister Of E.M.B. Church Dies

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR REV. J. H. QUIRING HELD AT DALLAS, ORE.

Dallas, Ore. — Rev. Jacob H. Quiring, 79, well-known retired minister of the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren church, died here Feb. 14.

Funeral services were held at the Dallas E. M. B. church on Feb.20. Rev. Arno Wiebe, the pastor, was conducting a series of special greetings at Mt. Lake, Minn. but returned here to have charge of the funeral.

A native of Minnesota, Rev. Quiring served as pastor of the church here from 1929 until 1941, but continued to assist in the work of the church after his retirement. He served for a number of years on the mission board of the E. M. B. Conference and was chairman of the Beacon Bible School here from 1936 to 1938.

Surviving in addition to members of the immediate family here is a brother, Rev. H. H. Quiring of Mountain Lake, Minn.

REV. J. H. QUIRING

Rev. Jacob H. Quiring, son of Henry and Helena Penner Quiring, was born on Jan. 10, 1880, in Lamberton, Minn. At the age of 14 he realized his lost condition and received the Lord Jesus Christ as his Saviour. He was then baptized and joined the Gospel Mennonite church at Mt. Lake, Minn., where he began to serve his Lord faithfully.

On May 22, 1906, he married Helena Hamm and settled on a farm north of town. To this union were born five children: Jacob J., Alfred, Lillian, Leander and Elvin. In 1916 they left Mt. Lake with their family and moved to a farm near Chinook, Mont. There they became affiliated with the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church. The rigors of dry years and cold winters compelled them to leave the area in 1919 and they came to Dallas, which has been their home for 40 years. It was their privilege to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in May 1956.

In 1920 Mr. Quiring was chosen as assistant pastor, and the same year he was ordained to the Lord's service. He served faithfully as assistant and later as pastor of the E. M. B. church in Dallas. He was also a member of the board of Salem Memorial Hospital. He followed the trade of carpentry, and after his retirement from the ministry he made a hobby of building trailers.

During the last few years he had been failing in health, although he continued taking an active interest in the home, the church, in civic and religious affairs of the community. His friendly greeting will be missed by all who knew him. Except for the last Sunday, he maintained a perfect Sunday School record for eight years. He had been having recurrent severe heart attacks for several months, and on the evening of Feb. 14 he quietly passed away in his home.

Surviving him are his wife, Helena of Dallas; four sons, Jacob J., Alfred and Elvin of Salem, and Leander of Hermiston; one daughter, Mrs. Nick (Lillian) Goertzen, Dallas; four daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Five brothers and one sister also survive, although only the sister, Mrs. Pete Neufeld of Dallas, resides in the West. The others are Rev. H. H. Quiring, Ben H. Quiring, and P. H. Quiring, all of Mt. Lake, Minn., John H. of St. James, Minn. and Abe H. of Minneapolis, Minn. All except Abe were present for the golden wedding in 1956.

We do not sorrow as those who have no hope, but we are looking for that blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ, when we shall be forever united in the presence of the Lord. — The Family.
