GERHARD QUIRING

Gerhard Quiring was born to Gerhard and Maria Willms Quiring on January 11, 1901 in the village of Fuerstenwerder in the Ukraine. His mother passed away when he was just 14 days old and so he was raised by his maternal grandparents. Acceptance of Christ as personal Saviour came about in the winter of 1924. That summer, on August 22, 1924, he was married to Anna Willms. The following year they emigrated to Canada, and after brief stops in Manitoba and southern Alberta, they settled in the Namaka district in 1926. Here they farmed and served the Lord. It was at Namaka that he realized his need for total obedience to the Lord and followed the Lord in baptism in August, 1944.

In 1968, after farming at Namaka for 42 years, they retired to Calgary where he and his wife enjoyed five comfortable years, His moments of greatest happiness were those he and his wife could spend with their children and grandchildren, exactly what they were doing when the Lord called him home. The family rejoices that he fought a good fight and kept the faith and look forward to meeting him again.

The Lord saw fit to call him home as a result of cerebral hemorrhage on November 16, at Tofield, Alta., after only a few hours of illness. He is survived by his wife, Anna; five daughters, Ann (Mrs. A.) Wittenberg and Lydia (Mrs. Jake) Nikkel, both of Tofield, Agatha (Mrs. Arnold) Friesen, Bertha (Mrs. John) Schmidt and Esther (Mrs. Ken) Epp, all of Calgary; four sons, George of Tofield, Abe of Winnipeg, and Alfred and Ted of Calgary; 35 grandchildren and one great-grandson; as well as two sisters.

The funeral was conducted from the Highland Mennonite Brethren Church, Calgary, with Rev. A.L. Klassen and Rev. P.J. Doerksen, a close personal friend, ministering.
