MRS. JACOB J. PREHEIM
Mrs. Jacob J. Preheim, daughter of Rev. Christian and Anna Stucky Kaufman, was born July 11, 1875, in Walshtown township, Yankton county, South Dakota, She lived there two years after which time her parents moved to the place now occupied by Mrs. Jacob C. Kaufman. She enjoyed only a limited education, first in her father’s home and later in rural school.
She was baptized upon her personal confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ on June 22, 1890, by her father at the Salem church, now the Salem-Zion church.
On Oct. 27, 1892, she was married to Jacob J. Preheim by Rev. Christian Kaufman. They were blessed with nearly 62 years of married life. Eight children were born to them: Rudolph, Emil, Julius, Ida, Edward J., Jacob Roy, Otto and Edna. After farming for 46 years they moved to Freeman in 1938.
Mrs. Preheim was a charter member of the Salem church. She enjoyed fairly good health until 1931 when she submitted to a major operation for kidney stones. She was a diabetic the last 10 years of her life. On April 1, 1954, her husband passed on from this life. Weakening since then, she waited patiently on the Lord.
On May 27, 1954, she entered Freeman hospital. There she quietly passed on June 3, 1954, at the age of nearly 79 years. An intestinal obstruction caused her death.
She and her husband left an unbroken family circle of eight children, five daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law, 20 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers and two sisters. One brother, Rev. John C. Kaufman, remains.
The funeral was held on Sunday, June 6, at the Salem Mennonite church, Freeman, South Dakota, and interment was in the local cemetery. Pastor J. Herbert Fretz preached on Psalm 139:17, 18, assisted by John C. Kaufman.
