Death Claims Retired Wellman Businessman
Wellman, Iowa. — Funeral services for Lewis J. Powell Sr., 90, well-known retired businessman here, were held March 30 at the Wellman Mennonite Church. Rev. Ron Kennel and Rev. Noah Landis officiated.
Mr. Powell died March 27 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
A native of Elida, Ohio, he was a 1907 graduate of the commercial department at Goshen College. He came to South English, Iowa in 1909 and founded a hardware and implement business there in 1911. In 1923 he established the Powell Funeral home in South English, and in 1943 purchased the funeral home in Wellman. In 1946 he founded the Powell Furniture Store here. Since his retirement he had been associated with the Powell Funeral Homes.
Surviving in the immediate family are his widow, the former Ida E. Hertzler; two sons, John S. of South English and Lewis J. Jr. of Keota; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Mary) Culp of rural Goshen, Ind. and Mrs. Russell (Dorothy) Schaeffer of Angola, Ind.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
