Heinrich Johann Plett

Nach längerer ärztlicher Behandlung starb Br. Plett durch sein Herzleiden, am 26. Juni 1978, und zwar im Alter von 74 Jahren.

Das Begräbnis fand am 30. Juni in der MBG zu Coaldale statt.

Vom Leiter der Gemeinde wurde die Feier mit Gebet und folgenden Schriftworten eingeleitet: Phil. 1, 21: “Sterben ist mein Gewinn”; Psalm 116, 15: “Der Tod seiner Heiligen ist wertgehalten vor dem Herrn”, und zum Trost den Angehörigen die Worte Jesu nach Joh. 14, 27: “Meinen Frieden gebe ich euch, nicht wie die Welt gibt”.

Die Gemeinde sang darauf “So lang mein Jesus lebt und seine Kraft mich hebt, muß Furcht und Sorge von mir fliehn, mein Herz in Lieb erglühn.”

Br. H. Nikkel sprach über den Text nach Offb. 14, 13: “Selig sind die Toten, die in dem Herrn sterben von nun an. Ja, der Geist spricht, daß sie ruhen von ihrer Arbeit; denn ihre Werke folgen ihnen nach.” Der Redner betont einerseits das oft so traurige Diesseits, mit Krankheit, Abschiednehmen und Tod, und andrerseits das Jenseits eines gläubig Verstorbenen mit der Hoffnung des ewigen Lebens nach den Worten Jesu: “Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben. Wer an mich glaubt wird leben, ob er gleich stürbe”. [Joh. 11, 25]

Recht tröstend erscholl ein Duett von den Kindern des Verschiedenen [sic].

Der zweite Redner, Br. B. Knelsen, las das Lebensverzeichnis und sprach über Ps. 16,11: “Du tust mir kund den Weg zum Leben; vor dir ist Freude die Fülle und liebliches Wesen zu deiner Rechten ewiglich.” Auch tröstete er die angehörigen mit den herrlichen Worten aus 1. Thess. 4, 17: “Danach wir, die wir leben und übrig bleiben, werden zugleich mit ihnen hingerückt werden in den Wolken, dem Herrn entgegen in der Luft und werden also bei dem Herrn sein allezeit. So tröstet euch nun mit diesen Worten.”

Nach der Feier auf dem Friedhofe versammelten wir uns für die Gemeinschaft beim Trauermahl, und wiederum hatte sich an diesem Tage die Zahl der Gräber auf unserm Friedhofe um ein Saatkorn vermehrt. Weit über 500 sind es nun schon, die hier auf unserm mennonitischen Friedhofe der Auferstehung harren. “Die Erlösten des Herrn werden wiederkommen mit Jauchzen; ewige Freude wird über ihrem Haupte sein; Freude und Wonne werden sie ergreifen, und Schmerz und Seufzen wird entfliehen”. [Jes. 35, 10]

Hier noch einige Daten aus dem Lebensverzeichnis: Br. Plett wurde in Rußland geboren und erzogen. Im Jahre 1929 wanderte er nach Kanada aus, zuerst nach Manitoba und später nach Gem, Alberta. Er zog im Jahre 1944 nach Coaldale, wo er bis zu seinem Abscheiden gewohnt hat. Er hinterläßt seine liebe Gattin, Frau Maria Plett; sieben Söhne: Peter von Powell River, B.C.; Nick, Vancouver, B.C.; Jakob, von Richmond, B.C.; Bill, von Australien; Karl, von Burnaby, B.C.; Abram von Lethbridge und David von Coaldale. Sechs Töchter: Lena, (Frau A. Barrows), Medicine Hat; Olga (Frau R. Zingle) Thorsby; Dora (Frau Mayne), Port Moody, B.C.; Irene (Frau F. Dal Collo), Redcliff; Elviera (Frau R. Cyre), Coaldale, und Martha (Frau R. Green), Lethbridge; 30 Enkelkinder und 3 Urenkelkinder.

Seine erste Frau Sarah ging ihm anno 1942 im Tode voran, sowie auch ein Sohn, eine Tochter, zwei Schwestern und vier Brüder.

Die Trauerfamilie dankt für alle erwiesene Liebe und Teilnahme!

After prolonged medical treatment, Br. Plett died from his heart condition, on June 26, 1978, at the age of 74.

The funeral took place on June 30 at the Coaldale MB Church.

The leader of the congregation introduced the service with prayer and the following words of Scripture: Phil. 1:21: "Dying is my gain"; Psalm 116:15: "The death of his saints is worthy in the sight of the Lord", and for the comfort of the relatives the words of Jesus according to John 14:27: "My peace I give to you, not as the world gives".

The congregation then sang, "So lang mein Jesus lebt und seine Kraft mich hebt, muß Furcht und Sorge von mir fliehn, mein Herz in Lieb erglühn” (As long as my Jesus lives and his power lifts me up, fear and worry must flee from me, my heart must glow with love)."

Br. H. Nikkel spoke about the text of Rev. 14:13: "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, the Spirit says that they may rest from their labours; for their works follow them." The speaker emphasizes, on the one hand, this life that is so often sad, with illness, farewell and death; and on the other hand, the afterlife of a believing deceased with the hope of eternal life, according to the words of Jesus: "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live even if he dies". [John 11:25]

A duet of the children of the departed resounded in a way that was quite comforting.

The second speaker, brother B. Knelsen, read the life story and spoke about Ps. 16:11: "You make known to me the path of life; before you there is abundance of joy, and sweetness at your right hand forever.” He also comforted them with the wonderful words from 1 Thess. 4:17: "After this, we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so shall always be with the Lord. Comfort yourselves therefore with these words."

After the service in the cemetery, we gathered for fellowship at the funeral meal, and once again the number of graves in our cemetery increased by a seed that day. There are now well over 500 graves awaiting resurrection in our Mennonite cemetery. "The redeemed of the Lord shall return with rejoicing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; gladness and delight shall take hold of them, and pain and sighing shall flee away." [Isaiah 35:10]

Here is some more information from his life story: Brother Plett was born and grew up in Russia. In 1929 he emigrated to Canada, first to Manitoba and later to Gem, Alberta. He moved to Coaldale in 1944, where he lived until his death. He leaves behind his dear wife, Mrs. Maria Plett; seven sons: Peter of Powell River, B.C.; Nick, Vancouver, B.C.; Jakob, of Richmond, B.C.; Bill, of Australia; Karl, of Burnaby, B.C.; Abram of Lethbridge and David of Coaldale. Six daughters: Lena, (Mrs. A. Barrows), Medicine Hat; Olga (Mrs. R. Zingle) Thorsby; Dora (Mrs. Mayne), Port Moody, B.C.; Irene (Mrs. F. Dal Collo), Redcliff; Elviera (Mrs. R. Cyre), Coaldale, and Martha (Mrs. R. Green), Lethbridge; 30 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

His first wife Sarah preceded him in death in 1942, as well as a son, a daughter, two sisters and four brothers.

The bereaved family is grateful for all the love and sympathy shown!
