ELSIE LOUISE PETERS

Elsie Louise Peters, missionary to South Africa, passed away on March 26. She was born to Johann and Maria (nee Loewen) Peters on May 31, 1918 in Millerovo, Russia. In 1924 her family immigrated to Saskatche wan, and in 1928 they moved to Yarrow, B.C. She learned to love the Lord at an early age, and was baptized at age 17. She graduated from Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills, Alta., attended Tabor College, and also involved herself in a missionary medical training program in Toronto. In 1949 she was ordained as a missionary by Oswald Smith of Toronto, and sent by the Evangelical Alliance Mission, today known as TEAM, to Zululand, South Africa. In 1975 she resigned from TEAM to accept a position with the Christian Education Board of the Evangelical Church of South Africa. She was assigned to work with women and to train youth . workers. Her last letter said that the work was com pleted, and that she had turned all pro grams over to local workers. She began a bat tle with cancer in 1976, and after ma jor surgery and treatments she died in the Addington Hospital, Durban, South Africa. Memorial services were held on April 1 at the Culloden Mennonite Brethren Church, Vancouver, with pastor Victor Toews and John C. Dyck officiating, and at the Fraserview Mennonite Brethren Church, Richmond, B.C. with pastor Loyal Funk officiating. Elsie had been a member of the Culloden church for the past several years, and her family is grateful to the members for the love and support shown to her.
