HENRY PETERS

Henry Peters of Winnipeg passed away Aug. 19. He was born Apr. 15, 1910 to Peter and Katharina Peters in Rosenort, Sagradowka, southern Russia. At 17, he recognized an emptiness and acknowledged Christ. The next year he was baptized by Heinrich Voth and joined Nikoleifeld Mennonite Church. His father died in 1927. Collectives were intro duced in 1931, and in 1932 he was appointed district super visor. Difficult times followed. In 1934 he married Sara Wiebe. In 1943 they fled to Bommelsen, Luneberg, where he worked on a farm. He was rebaptized by Gustav Ratzlaff and joined the MB church. In 1947 they immigrated to Sanford, Man. In 1948 they moved to Springstein, Man., where he began working for Canadian Pacific Railway. They joined the local MB church. In 1956 they moved to Winnipeg, joining South End MB Church. Sara died in May, 1961. In June, 1962 he married Elfriede Toews. He retired from the CPR May 1, 1975. His happy retirement was marred by a leg fracture that took 2 years to heal and pneumonia that damaged his lungs. By 1987 he could no longer enjoy the Banff mountains, and by 1989 he could no longer attend church. He is remembered as one who loved his Lord, his family and his church. Predeceased by his first wife Sara and 3 brothers, he is mourned by his wife Elfriede; daughters Frieda Schmidt, Tena Hamm and Charlotte Klassen; son Henry; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and 1 sister.
