Katharina Janzen Penner, our mother, was born in Kleefeld, South Russia, on May 5, 1869, and passed away Sept. 11, 1954, at 2:40 reaching the age of 65 years, four months and six days. She was the last of her family to pass to her reward.

The first six years of her life were spent in Russia until her family migrated to America in 1875. Sharing in the experience of the early pioneers, she grew to womanhood amidst the challenge and the limitations of pioneer life.

She received her elementary schooling in the Emmanthal [''sic'' ?]school near Hillsboro, Kans.

She was baptized upon the confession of her faith May 29, 1887, by Elder Jacob Buller and became a member of the Alexanderwohl church. She took her baptism seriously. It was to her a sign of the covenant she had made with God.

She was married to H. H. Penner, a member of the First Mennonite church of Hillsboro on March 29, 1891. At that time she transferred her membership to this church, where she remained a faithful member until her death.

To this union were born five sons and seven daughters. Father preceded her in death Sept. 27, 1932, leaving her a widow for nearly 22 years. Also three sons, one daughter, one son-in-law, two daughters-in-law and one grandchild preceded her.

Mother was a praying mother and also shared of her means, especially for relief and missions. She read her Bible diligently and attended church punctually.

Mother had many years of excellent health which were interrupted with a serious operation in 1917. In later years she developed several ailments and during this time she made known her desire to be with her Lord.

She became seriously sick, Sunday, Sept. 5. Saturday, Sept. 11, at 2:40 p.m. she fell softly asleep to be with her Lord forever.

There remain to mourn her departure Susie and Abe Friesen, Eva and Ferd Sommerfeld, Louise and William Knak, P. H. Penner, Tena Schroeder, Marie and Johann Ewert, Alvin and Frieda Penner, Selma and Arnold Penner, 23 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. We sorrow, but not as those who have no hope.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Mennonite church of Hillsboro with Rev. Elbert Koontz officiating, assisted by Rev. H. T. Unruh of North Newton. Music was furnished by a men’s quartet. Burial was made in the Alexanderfeld cemetery.
