— Mrs. Robert Penner, 72, of Hillsboro died at Salem Hospital there Tuesday aft er a long illness. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Johannestal Church near Hillsboro, followed by services at the Grace hill Mennonite Church east of Newton at 3 p.m. Burial will be made in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Penner was formerly Mrs. P. P. (Alice) Schmidt of rural Newton. Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. W. C. Voth, Mrs. Oscar Schmidt and Mrs. Naomi Henderson of Newton and Mrs. Ted Voth of Whitewater.

Alice Kliewer Penner was born on April 11, 1893 near Whitewater, Kan. She was the daughter of John P. and Eva Jantz Kliewer.

Attendance at neighborhood Sunday school and at services of the Swiss church near Whitewater were meaningful to her. On Aug. 1, 1909 she was baptized on confession of faith by Rev. G. N. Harms, a testimony to which she remained faithful. She was a member of the Gracehill and later the Johannestal Mennonite Church.

On Aug. 27, 1914 she was married to Peter P. Schmidt with whom she shared 39 years of life's pilgrimage. Sometimes during the depression years the going was not easy but a common interest in the Lord's work gave them joy to contribute to missions and other causes. Her companion went to be with the Lord on Nov. 11, 1953.

A year later she saw in a new friendship a call from the Lord to another area of service. On Nov. 28, 1954 she was married to Robert F. Penner of Hillsboro. There she was active in church and community work. Never having had a family of her own, she entered heartily into the joys of motherhood for step-children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In return she received their love, especially in their ministries during her prolonged illness. Early in the morning of Feb. 8, 1966 she went to be with the Lord. Survivors include her husband, Robert F. Penner, two step-daughters with their husbands, Edna and Lewis Unruh, Hillsboro, Esther and Ed Seibel of Wichita, two step-sons, Harry of Galva and Arnold and wife Selma of Hillsboro; sisters, Mrs. W. C. (Naomi) Henderson, Mrs. W. C. (Matilda) Voth, Sarah and husband Leo Voth, Regina and husband O. E. Schmidt of the Newton community; Mrs. Ralph (Martha) Brackney of Glendale, Calif.; brothers Ludwig and wife Lavone of Los Angeles, Calif.; William and wife Doris of California City, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Simeon (Anna) Kliewer; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held Feb. 11 at the Johannestal church at Hillsboro, Kan., Rev. Henry Goossen officiating. Another short service was held at the Grace Hill church with Rev. E. J. Miller in charge, Rev. J. J. Voth giving a short message. Burial was on the Grace Hill cemetery.
