— Funeral services were held at the Grace Hill Mennonite church Saturday afternoon, Jan. 16, for Mrs. Abraham J. Penner, 77, who died Jan. 13 shortly after being admitted to the Bethel Deaconess hospital. Rev. Herbert E. Miller, the pastor, officiated at the funeral. Mrs. Penner was the former Elizabeth Gaede, and was born in Poland. She and her husband lived on a farm near here for many years, moving to Newton four years ago. Surviving are Mr. Penner of the home in Newton, six daughters, four sons, Roland, Ben, Carl and John, all of the Newton vicinity, 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

MRS. ABRAHAM J. PENNER

Elizabeth S. Penner, daughter of John and Sarah Gaede, was born July 7, 1882 in Poland. She passed away due to a heart attack while being taken to the hospital on Jan. 12, 1960, having reached the age of 77 years, six months, and five days.

At the age of two and one-half years she with her parents came to Hillsboro, Kansas where she spent her early years in the French Creek community. On May 19, 1902 she was baptized on her confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ by Elder John Gerbrandt in the Johannesthal Mennonite church near Hillsboro, Kansas. On May 5, 1904 she was united in marriage to Abraham J. Penner of Newton, Kansas, at the Johannesthal church, Rev. G. N. Harms officiating.

They established their home in the Grace Hill community and lived there for 19 years. Then they moved to a farm northeast of Newton where they lived for about 32 years. In 1955 they bought a home in Newton where she resided until her death.

Through all the 55 years of their marriage she was a faithful member of the Grace Hill Mennonite church. For a number of years she was a teacher in an adult Sunday school class. On Sunday afternoon, May 9, 1954, they were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. She was a loving wife and a mother whose utmost concern was for the care and welfare of her family.

She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, Abraham; six daughters; Mrs. Francis (Sidonia) Sheridan of Holton, Kansas, Mrs. Cecil (Sarah) Logan of Payette, idaho, Mrs. Earl (Selma) Plank of Culver City, Calif., Mrs. Hulda Wright of Los Angels, Calif.; Mrs. Orpha Swift of Garden Grove, Calif.; and Mrs. Ralph (Zella) Brown of Hazelton, Idaho; four sons, Roland, Ben, and Carl of Newton, and John of Route 4, Newton; 15 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, one brother-in-law, and a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three infant sons, her parents, three brothers, Jake, Henry, and John Gaede, one sister, Mrs. Henry Schmidt, two sisters-in-law, and three grandchildren.
