ELIZABETH PENNER

Elizabeth Penner of Coaldale, Alta. passed away Aug. 26. She was born Mar. 11 , 1900 to Johann and Katarina Fast in Zagradovka, Ukraine. She spent her early years in B1umenort. In her late teens she accepted Christ at evangelistic services in a nearby village; she was baptized the next year. In 1926 she immigrated to Winnipeg with relatives. She had a job until marrying John Penner in January, 1927. In March, 1930 they moved to Gem, Alta., where they farmed until retiring to Coaldale in 1964. John died in spring, 1967. There were 5 things she loved best: nature (especially trees and flowers), music, friends, family and God. She was well known for her good cooking, friendly nature and generous hospitality. She once welcomed 30 children from a stranded school bus. In her last months she became immobile and felt that her main purpose left was to pray for her family and others. Her steadfast faith remained to the end. Her life was a source of strength and encouragement. Predeceased by her husband, first daughter Elizabeth in infancy, son Cornelius in an accident at 21, 4 sisters and 3 brothers, she is mourned by her daughters Agnes Janzen, Anne Flanning, Kathy Fletcher and Betty Lewis; sons John, Walter and William; 16 grandchildren and 10 great·grandchildren. The funeral was Aug. 29 in Coaldale MB Church, with Jake Doerksen ministering.
