Pioneer Immigrant Died at Dodge City

Inman, Kans. — Funeral services were held at the Bethel Mennonite church Nov. 30 for John J. Pauls, 79, pioneer settler here who came from Russia with his parents in 1874. He passed away at a Dodge City convalescent home on Nov. 26.

He formerly served as deacon at the Bethel church here and also at Perryton, Texas, where the family lived from 1921 to 1935. Later he moved to Meade, Kans., and was a member of the E.M.B. church near Meade at the time of his death.

He is survived by two daughters and three sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, eight stepchildren, two brothers, Jacob J. and Henry J. Pauls of Inman, and a sister, Mrs. Helena Neufeld, of Inman.

JOHN J. PAULS

Our father, John J. Pauls, was born January 23, 1873, in South Russia. He passed away to be with the Lord November 26, 1952 reaching the age of 79 years, 10 months and three days.

In 1874 he came to America with his parents. They settled on a farm near Buhler, Kansas. In 1892, he saw his lost condition and found peace with the Lord in the Blood of Jesus Christ. Upon his confession of faith he was baptized by Elder Heinrich Toews on June 6, 1892, and received as member into the Bethel church.

He was married to Susanna Neufeld on March 13, 1894, at Inman, Kansas. To this union nine children were born or whom four preceded him in death in infancy. In 1921 our parents moved to Perryton, Texas, where our mother died February 23, 1935.

November 17, 1935, our father was married to Mrs. Helena Regehr of Inman, Kansas. They moved back to Inman again. Our second mother died February 22, 1949.

At the time of his death, our father was a member of the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren church located southeast of Meade, Kansas. In his earlier life, he was an active church worker. For some time he was Sunday school superintendent. He was also choir director. October 10, 1920, he was ordained as deacon in the Bethel church. He served here till 1921 and then at Perryton, Texas. Throughout his life he gave evidence of a life in close fellowship with the Lord. On his bed of affliction, although bodily strength and mind was failing, yet when we spoke of spiritual things and of the Lord our Saviour, his mind was clear and he stood firm in his faith to the end. For this we praise God.

He leaves to mourn three sons: Jacob N. Pauls of Minneola, Kansas, Isaac N. Pauls of Dallas, Oregon, and Pete Pauls of Meade, Kansas; two daughters, Mrs. Agnes Sawatzky of Weatherford, Okla., and Miss Susie Pauls of Omaha, Neb. two brothers, Jacob J. and Henry J. Pauls, both of Inman, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Helena Neufeld of Inman, Kansas; 15 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, all of whom are boys; eight step-children and their families, seven at Inman and one at Shafter, Calif.

When earthly ties are broken it gives pain, but we rejoice in knowing that Father has gone to be with the Lord, where there is peace and joy forever. — The Bereaved Family.
