VICTOR DAVID PANKRATZ

Victor Pankratz was born in Russia on February 16, 1927 to David and Anna Pankratz. The family moved to Canada, to Coaldale, Alta., the next year. In 1949 he married Susie Dueck.

After graduating from the Mennonite Brethren Bible College in Winnipeg in 1953, Rev. Pankratz continued farming until moving to Hillsboro, Kansas to attend Tabor College. He later received his M.A. at Emporia State College, and commenced a teaching career in LaGlace and Sexsmith, Alta. As a teacher, he always took a personal interest in the lives of his students. His courageous spirit and faith had an inspiring influence on the students and staff.

While teaching, he also served faithfully as pastor of the LaG lace Mennonite Brethren Church, after ordination by the Alberta Mennonite Brethren Conference. His commitment to the call to the ministry was expressed in his willingness to give much in service to God and his fellow mun. Discipleship was explicitly expressed in his belief in and practice of a simple style of life. His work will be treasured by the church and community, During two and a half years of illness his service was somewhat curtailed, but his contagious optimism and trust in God continued to influence others.

After a painful struggle with cancer he passed away on January 16. The large audience at the funeral service on January 19 at the Sexsmith Public School auditorium was evidence of the valuable memories he left with the community.

He leaves to mourn his beloved wife, Susie; three sons, Charles, Stanley, and Bobby; one daughter-in-law, Phyllis; his mother, (Mrs.) Anna Pankratz; one sister, (Mrs) Erika Penner; one brother Werner; and many relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Rev. David Pankratz, and two sisters, Elvira and Ella.
