Luxembourg Church Left Without Leader

SERVICES FOR JOSEPH OESCH HELD IN EUROPE SUNDAY, JULY 18

Lancaster, Pa. — The only European Mennonite congregation in Luxembourg suffered a tragic blow in the sudden, accidental death of its lone pastor and elder, Joseph Oesch, on July 15.

The accident occured [sic] when Bro Oesch's tractor rolled down an embankment while he was attempting a turn on a small country road. His 13-year-old son and 19-year-old daughter who were with him escaped with very little injury. Bro. Oesch was apparently killed instantly.

A large number of relatives, neighbors and brethren from other parts gathered for the funeral service on Sunday, July 18. He leaves his wife and six children.

A small group of about fifty members comprising the European Mennonite congregation in Luxembourg. Only recently have they completed a chapel for their use after meeting in a rented hall for many years.

In the absence of a leader the Brethren Harvey Miller and Clarence Fretz have been asked to minister to this congregation until some other arrangement is made. Miller and Fretz are missionaries serving in Luxembourg under the Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities.
