Tanzanian leader dies in accident

MAKOKO MUSOMA, Tanzania — Matiku Thomas Nyitambe, a leader in the Tanzanian Mennonite Church, died in an automobile accident oct. 3. He was 67.

The accident occurred while Nyitambe was driving from his native home of Kirongwe near the Kenyan border.

His wife, Penina, sustained minor injuries and was released from the hospital the next day.

Nyitambe was general secretary of the Tanzanian Mennonite Church from 2001 to 2007 and was serving on the executive council at the time of his death.

He also served on the Mennonite World Conference General Council from 2003 to 2009 and on the MWC Executive Committee from 2006 to 2009.

Nyitambe worked professionally in various government roles.

A funeral service was planned in Kirongwe, a few miles north of the Tanzanian Mennonite Church center in Shirati.
